How does doctoral research travel the world (with RCC funding!)?

(c) Matthias Höfler, Uni Graz

Read Matthias Höfler's travelogue from Milan

What do you know about soft tissue nonlinear biomechanical models? PhD researcher Matthias Höfler of the IDea_Lab at University of Graz can tell you more!

He recently did exactly that on a conference trip co-funded by our RCC travel grants. Here's his report!

1) What was the funding used for?

I attended the SIMAI 2025 conference for applied and industrial mathematics, where I presented joint work during a mini-symposium organised by collaborators from Politecnico di Milano.
The project was joint work with Medizinische Universität Graz, the organisers from Milan, and other researchers from the department of mathematics, including my former supervisor, Federica Caforio.

2) Why did it matter?

It was an opportunity to meet our Italian collaborators in person and exchange results and ideas. I also gained significant insights into current research in cardiac modelling. Overall, I benefited from all the input and ideas shared by other researchers.

3) What else do you remember about the trip?

One day, a huge rainstorm suddenly flooded the whole inner city. The water was up to my knees, so I almost had to swim back to my hotel.

Thanks for sending this in, Matthias!
