Conditions for receiving funding from the RCC
Timelines
- Submission is possible before or after completing the activity, but within the same calendar year.
- Deadline for submission is the 15th of March, July and October (funding for PhD examiners: no deadline, funding for Ambassador Grants: Oct 15)
Transfer of funds
The RCC transfers the funds after the activity is finished within the university (to a cost center/Innenauftrag), not to individuals. To trigger the transfer of funds, we require an email to rcc(at)uni-graz.at which includes
- request for “Budgetumbuchung” (transfer of funds)
- an SAP statement showing the costs related to the grant as outgoings in the account
- exact amount to be transferred
- confirmation letter received from the RCC
- number of the internal order/cost center to which the money should be transferred
- keywords (e.g. “RCC PostDoc Grant Your Name Month Year”) and a reason (e.g. RCC grant confirmation from Date for activity XY)
Individuals themselves arrange to receive the funds from their home department / center.
Selection process & criteria
- First-time applications will be prioritized.
- Funding is awarded on the basis of financial resources available.
- There is no legal entitlement to funding.
- Applications with formal errors or incomplete ones will not be considered (may resubmit for next deadline).
- At least 50% of the grants each year will be awarded to female/inter*/nonbinary researchers.
The following criteria are used to evaluate applications:
- Necessity and relevance of funding for enhancing researchers' careers is plausible.
- Funding must provide added value to carrying out the activity.
- Amount of funding requested is based on a realistic cost calculation, and appropriate (i.e. within the maximum amount for the respective grant category).
Responsibilities of grantees
- Need to be available for questions related to administrating the payment of funds.
- Are responsible for proper use of funds and adhering to the framework of regulations at the University of Graz (e.g. Reisekostenrichtlinien, Refundierungsrichtlinien).
- Agree to be contacted by the RCC for impact evaluation purposes.
- Agree to be featured in public relations activities by the University of Graz (with prior notice).
- Must make support of RCC known on event announcements (website, flyer, programme, etc.).
- Inform RCC of any delays in the activities, immediately and unbidden (note: If the confirmed grant is not accessed at the latest two years after the date of confirmation, the grant is forfeited.)
- If the confirmed grant is not used appropriately by the funding recipient, the entire amount of the grant is to be paid back.
Eligiblity
- Eligible are 1) employees in research contracts and 2) doctoral candidates of the University of Graz (see below for different target groups).
- Employment contract or doctoral studies need to be ongoing while carrying out and requesting reimbursement for the activity.
- If the activity includes mobility,university employees need to have submitted a travel application via the Electronic Travel Workflow ERW before the start of the trip.

Doctoral Researchers
The Research Careers Campus supports the active participation of doctoral candidates of the University of Graz in academic conferences, thereby contributing to their professional development and international visibility.
Eligibility and Application Requirements
- Funding is available to doctoral candidates enrolled at the University of Graz. The applicant confirms that the supervisor has been informed about the planned event participation and agrees to the activity.
- Grants are awarded to support active participation in academic or scientific events, such as giving presentations or presenting posters.
What Can Be Funded?
- Travel and accommodation costs
- Participation/registration fee for conference
Maximum funding per grant:
- Up to €500 for activities within Austria
- Up to €800 for international mobility within Europe
- Up to €1.200 for international mobility outside Europe

Postdoctoral Researchers
PostDoc Grants provide financial support for the research activities of researchers on temporary contracts to promote academic networking and the development of an independent research profile. Grants are available for (1) research-related travel, (2) event organization, and (3) as seed funding for third-party funding (Version 11.04.2025).
Eligible target group
Eligible for the PostDoc Grants are postdoctoral researchers employed at the University of Graz on a temporary contract in the categories Universitätsassistent:in mit Doktorat, Forschungsassistent:in mit Doktorat, Projektmitarbeiter:in mit Doktorat, Senior Lecturer mit erweiterten Forschungsaufgaben. The employment contract needs to be ongoing while carrying out the activity for which the grant is requested.
Funded activities & amount of funding per grant
Funds can be requested for activities led by postdoctoral researchers (optionally in consultation with other partners) in the following categories:
[1] Mobility Grant: Research-related mobility by individual postdoctoral researchers within Austria or internationally. Among the eligible costs are accommodation, travel expenses, attendance fees for conferences, expenses associated with research materials, field or archival research, use of equipment at the host institution/destination. Costs for only-online participation are not eligible. Amount of funding available: up to 400 Euro for mobility within Austria, up to 1000 Euro for international mobility. (In order for the PostDoc Office to refund your department for the costs, you need to have submitted a travel application via the Electronic Travel Workflow before the start of the trip.)
[2] Event Grant: Costs related to organizing academic events at the University of Graz which chiefly benefit postdoctoral researchers/in which postdoctoral researchers actively participate. Among the eligible costs are speaker fees (for travel, accommodation or fee for talks given), catering fees, room rent fees, equipment fees. Amount of funding available: up to 1500 Euro.
[3] Proposal: Costs either related to third-party funding applications to be (re-)submitted by postdoctoral researchers. Amount of funding available: up to 2000 Euro. Eligible are applications to national and international funding bodies, group or individual, such as costs for professional editing/proof reading of proposals or interview training fees. The applicant for the grant needs to be mentioned by name in the project proposal and the application needs to provide information about the targeted funding scheme/body, persons involved, topic, beneficiaries and involved organizations. It is required that the applicant is legally allowed to be employed at the University of Graz if the project is successfully funded. It it also required to provide proof that the third-party funding proposal has actually been submitted with a funding body.

Researchers with EV / QV contracts
Tenure Micro Grants are intended to aid in fulfillment of research activities outlined in an individual's development or qualification agreements. This is a pilot scheme through which we want to explore the needs of this staff group.
Amount of funding available: up to 2000 Euro.

The Research Careers Campus provides research grants for doctoral candidates in RCC consortia.
Research grants are available for may fieldwork, archival research, lab rotation, and similar research-related activities in Austria or abroad.
This funding scheme aims to help researchers early in their careers establish their own research collaborations and networks beyond the University of Graz. The research grants shall allow early-stage researchers to gain international experience, and to work on data collection, methods proficiency, and networks needed for doctoral projects at the highest quality level.
Eligibility and Application Requirements
- Eligible applicants: Doctoral candidates who are members of the RCC consortia. The applicant confirms that the doctoral supervisor has been informed about the planned activity and agrees that the activity is necessary/useful for the progress of the doctoral research project.

- Co-funding from other sources (e.g., faculty resources) is welcome.

Academic events (e.g., graduate conferences, guest lectures, workshops, summer/winter schools, retreats):
- Venue and function room costs
- Travel and accommodation expenses for external speakers/trainers
- Honoraria for external speakers/trainers

URBI+NAWI Fakultät
The presence of external reviewers at public thesis defenses strengthens early-stage researchers' connections to their scientific community and can also serve as an opportunity for further networking activities. The Research Careers Campus (RCC) provides support for travel expenses incurred by external dissertation reviewers.
Eligibility and Application Requirements
Eligible applicants are doctoral candidates or supervisors from the faculty of Natural Sciences and the faculty of Environmental, Regional and Educational Sciences.
What Can Be Funded?
Funding is available for travel and accommodation expenses for external reviewers.
If international reviewers come to Graz for public thesis defenses, this stay should be combined with a lecture or similar networking activity (exchange with further doctoral candidates, workshops, etc.). The organisation of the stay is in the responsibility the doctoral candidate’s institute or the respective dean's office.
Please note: Due to the impact on the climate, travelling by plane solely to attend a defense should be avoided wherever possible. The participation of external members in a thesis defense without any other networking activity should continue to take place online.
The maximum funding per grant is € 650.
