Supervisor Network (04/2025)

The Research Careers Campus Graz showcases people and networks which shape our research environment here in Graz - towards a more collegial, friendly and diverse academia, where all research talents can thrive.

Today, we showcase Jelena Tadic and Johann Hlina, two members of the supervisor network at the University of Graz. Built on the collegial consultation model, this network was established in May 2024 by participants of the workshop "Seminar on Master`s Thesis and PhD Supervision" with Gitte Wichmann-Hansen. Members of the group share critical situations from their supervision practice. This enables an exchange of experiences and a joint search for solutions to problems/challenges. The group is a testament to the fact that „it’s never too early to shape your skills; and it’s never too late“ (Jelena Tadic), and according to our interviewees, has improved clarity in decision making, confidence in the role of supervisor, being part of the network has provided structured mentorship, and improved communication with students for all group members.

Here are three answers to three questions to Jelena Tadic and Johann Hlina!

1) What is your activity called and why does it exist?

We are part of the Supervisor Network. This network was founded to improve to quality of supervision and therefore enhance learning of our students and support supervisors in their daily work.

2) What do you personally get out of your engagement with it?

Sharing the experiences and discussing challenges is highly valuable why to enhance one's own supervisor skills. In a group comprising of colleagues ranging from postdocs early in their supervisor careers to professors with many years of experience, We cherish the diversity of views and opinions.

3) Why should others join and how can they join?

With the mutually beneficial nature of the Supervisor Network everyone engaged in supervision can profit from the experience shared in the network and at the same time provides peers with their own perspective and knowledge. If you are interested in joining the Supervisor Network, just get in touch with the Research Careers Campus Graz.
