The Research Careers Campus Graz showcases people and networks which shape our research environment here in Graz - towards a more collegial, friendly and diverse academia, where all research talents can thrive.
Today, we showcase the Austria Chapter of the Marie Curie Alumni Association, and its organizers, James Jennings from University of Graz, together with Mengyang Liu and Kathrin Maly who are based in Vienna.
Here are their three answers to three questions.
1) What is your activity called and why does it exist?
We are the Austria Chapter of the Marie Curie Alumni Association (or MCAA). The MCAA was founded in 2012 to support all researchers involved in Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions (MSCA) projects. There are now over 20,000 members worldwide, and 130 registered in the Austrian chapter. The MCAA's main goals include supporting and connecting members, offering career development opportunities, and generally advocating for researchers. In our chapter we organise a number of events each year to bring together our members (usually in Graz or Vienna), , and at external events we also represent them and communicate the challenges of the Austrian academic landscape.
2) What do you personally get out of your engagement with it?
We have been lucky to meet a diverse group of researchers based in Austria and from all around the world, through our own organised events and at the MCAA annual general assembly. It's been a great opportunity to improve organisational and leadership skills, and expand our networks within Austria and beyond.
3) Why should others join and how can they join?
There are many reasons, ranging from career advice, to networking opportunities, and access to travel grants. Anyone who has been involved in any sort of MSCA project (independent/postdoctoral fellowships, doctoral networks and staff exchanges) in any capactiy is eligible, including the researchers and their supervisors. We organise regular events across Austria and help connect to other relevant local events. We are also looking for new members to join the running of the Austrian chapter, so please get in touch if you want to get some experience in organizing events and getting more involved in the MCAA community!
