Details:
A positive and constructive working relationship between doctoral researchers and their supervisors is essential for completing a PhD. It is also often the starting point for a successful research career. Conversely, a less constructive relationship may lead to frustration and, in the worst case, abandonment of the thesis project.
This workshop aims to enable doctoral researchers to manage their relationships with their supervisors in a constructive and goal-oriented manner. If there is sufficient interest among participants, it will also be possible to form a peer group on how to take an active role in shaping the PhD experience and how to successfully manage the relationship with the supervisor.
The 3-hour workshop will cover the following topics:
- How doctoral researchers can make their supervision more efficient, reliable and productive
- Practical exercises to improve supervision-related communication
- Tools for effective and solution-focused exchange in a PhD researchers' peer group
Trainers:
Dr. Yasmin Dolak-Struss is an experienced trainer and systemic coach specializing in career development for researchers. She studied technical physics and holds a doctorate in biomathematics. After several years in research and a subsequent career in a large research funding organization, where she trained and advised international researchers, she started her own business. Today, she supports researchers in strengthening their skill set and developing successful and meaningful careers both within and outside academia.
Dr. Gerald Lind studied History and German Linguistics and Literature at the University of Vienna and the University of Edinburgh. From 2006 to 2009, Lind was a member of the Doctoral College “Cultures of Difference” at the University of Vienna. He has published in a wide variety of contexts, from scholarly work to fiction. At the University of Graz, he serves as Deputy Head of the Research Careers Campus and develops institutional strategies to promote the personal and academic growth of researchers from diverse disciplinary backgrounds.
