How to get heard? Tips on Communicating Research

The workshop will explore different aspects of communicating science and research to media, including how to write for a broad non-academic audience, how to communicate with journalist and manage ones access to media. The workshop will include practical exercises in writing, giving interviews and tipps, as well as a discussion on the advantages and risks of keeping a public profile.
Florian Bieber is a Professor of Southeast European History and Politics and the director of the Centre for Southeastern Europe at the University of Graz. He coordinates the Balkans in Europe Policy Advisory Group (BiEPAG). Besides his academic publications, including Debating Nationalism (Bloomsbury 2020) and the Rise of Authoritarianism in the Western Balkans (Palgrave 2020), has written a book for a wider audience Pulverfass Balkan (Ch. Links 2023) and regularly gives interviews to international media, including in English, French, German and Bosnian/Serbian/Croatian, such as ZDF, France Culture, N1, ORF and BBC. He has written articles and op Eds for Die Zeit, New York Times, Politico, Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Die Presse and others.
