The Research Careers Campus Graz showcases people and networks which shape our research environment here in Graz - towards a more collegial, friendly and diverse academia, where all research talents can thrive.
Today, we showcase MIMA – Mittagessen mit Mathematikerinnen, and its organizers, Elisabetta Brocchieri, Federica Caforio, Mara Pompili, and Lara Trussardi! Here are their three answers to three questions.
1) What is your activity called and why does it exist?
We are four women from the Department of Mathematics and Scientific Computing, and we are members of the Gender Equality Plan Committee. Together, we created MIMA – Mittagessen mit Mathematikerinnen, a monthly lunch event where a female mathematician from our department presents her research to a broad student audience. After a short talk, students are encouraged to ask questions, discuss the topic, and engage in conversations with the speaker and us, the organizers.
This initiative aims to make female role models in mathematics more visible and to create an open, informal space for dialogue—about research, career paths, and everyday challenges in academia.
Given the enthusiastic response and steady participation, we are planning to continue this project next academic year, expanding both the topics and the visibility of the initiative.
On May 23rd, we are also organizing a special event with mathematical talks followed by a panel discussion titled “Challenges of Women in Mathematics and the Impact of External Funding on Research.” This broader format allows us to explore systemic issues and share experiences across career stages.
2) What do you personally get out of your engagement with it?
This work is deeply rewarding on many levels. It gives us the chance to connect with colleagues and students in meaningful ways and to contribute to a more inclusive academic environment. Seeing students feel encouraged to ask questions, speak up, and imagine themselves in future academic roles is incredibly motivating.
On a personal level, being part of MIMA strengthens our own sense of belonging in the academic world. It’s also a valuable reminder that even small steps — like a shared lunch and an honest conversation — can make a lasting impact.
3) Why should others join and how can they join?
We truly believe that everyone has a role to play in shaping a more inclusive academic environment. Joining initiatives like MIMA means becoming part of a growing effort to challenge stereotypes, highlight diverse perspectives, and create spaces where open discussion and mutual support are the norm.
For students, MIMA offers a unique opportunity to meet female researchers in a relaxed and approachable setting, ask questions about their work and career paths, and find inspiration and mentorship. For faculty and staff, it’s a chance to support younger generations and help normalize diversity at all levels of academic life.
You can participate simply by attending our events—everyone is welcome, regardless of gender, background, or academic level. We regularly announce upcoming MIMA sessions through emails, social networks and posters.
